How To Make Shatter?

1. Prepare the materials needed.

Grind up your preferred buds in preparation for the extraction process. They should be close to how fine weed is in a joint. Stuff up an extraction tube with the ground-up weed. It should be packed enough that there is no air inside but loose enough for the solvent to seep through. Close one end of the extraction tube with a coffee filter secured with a hose clamp.

2. Begin the extraction process.

Start to fill up the extraction tube with butane. Make sure to do it outdoors, as butane is a flammable solvent. An infusing tool, called the Green Machine, makes the process safer for the manufacturer. Even the slightest static from the clothes may cause a spark, a fire, or even an explosion. Never do the extraction process with your bare hands. Prepare a Pyrex pan underneath the setup to collect the extracted material from the plant. Wait until the liquid coming from the extraction tube runs clear.

3. Heat up the extracted liquid.

Right now, what you have is a butane-infused liquid. It may be full of cannabinoids and terpenes, but it is unsafe for human ingestion. The butane should be evaporated from the solution, so all that’s left is the good stuff. On a spark-resistant plate, heat up the solution at 90F (32C) until all that’s left is goo of cannabis extract. When the goo starts bubbling, transfer it to a non-stick, flexible oven mat. As it cools down, allow it to bubble and sizzle until it stops.

4. Continue drying in a vacuum oven.

Even after evaporating the butane from the solution, the goo will still look moist and soft. However, what we need for a shatter is its infamous brittle and glass-like appearance. Transfer the concentrate from the oven mat to parchment paper. Continue to heat up the goo in a vacuum oven set at 90F (32C). Purge the remaining solvent until the sizzling reaction stops. There is no specific time for this step. You need to keep an eye out of the concentrate until it stops reacting to the heat.

5. Scrape the shatter and store.

Take the parchment paper out of the oven and let the shatter cool off. In the meantime, prepare a dabber and an air-tight and lightproof container. When it’s all cool, peel off the parchment paper and use the dabber to crack the shatter to fit in the container. The shatter may be sticky as it is freshly made. But remember to have a little patience and reward yourself afterward.

What Is Shatter?

Shatter is a cannabis concentrate known for its brittle, glass-like texture. Extracted with Butane, it is one of the concentrates that use solvents for its extraction process. It has a snap-and-pull consistency that makes it malleable and easy to handle. Shatter can be used as a spread on blunts or joints or dabbed using a rig. It has a sunny yellow to bright orange coloring.

The History of Shatter

Shatters are relatively a recent development as a method of cannabis consumption. Its discovery traces back to the age-old practice of hashish production. By the late 1990s, during the process of refining cannabis concentrate production, is when shatter was first produced.

But shatter was not a mistake like most discoveries. As early as 1973, the research of producing potent-rich products was on its way. From there, updates were made in 1977 and 1989. After years of researching and perfecting, the late 1990s saw the production of cannabis concentrates, including shatter. Later on, it became a stoning staple from the early 2000s until today.

Shatter FAQs

Can I Dab Shatter?
Yes, you can dab a shatter. Dabbing concentrates like shatter offers a more potent high. It also includes terpene-rich flavors and aromas compared to smoking regular marijuana. Consuming shatters through dabbing may have different experiences depending on the rig, nail, and temperature used.

What Happens If You Eat Shatter?
Consuming raw shatter is unlikely to produce desirable effects. Like other concentrates, shatter should undergo decarboxylation before it becomes usable. Decarboxylation is the process of heating up concentrates to activate their stored compounds to produce desirable effects. Concentrates like shatter needs tools such as a dab rig, e-rig, or a vaporizer for the compounds to activate.

What Are The Side Effects Of Shatter?
Potent-rich concentrates like shatter can have a significant effect on the human body. Although it may relieve stress and cause relaxation, it can also cause anxiety and paranoia. Overconsumption is one aspect that a stoner should be careful about when using concentrates. Remember that a little comes a long way.

How Do I Store Shatter?
Improper storing of shatter causes a change of consistency, flavor, and potency. To store shatter, using an air-tight and lightproof container is the most ideal method to do. It should also be in a cool room. Protect your container from high temperatures, moisture, and oxygen for it to stay consistent as possible.
